One example is the naturally occurring oil seepage. "Natural gas and oil seepage is the greatest source of petroleum pollution in the ocean and atmosphere."(taken from the SOS California website)

If you are concerned about our oceans and marine life or just in general want to be a good steward to this land, policies need to change. Take some time and check out the SOS California website.

Take action, learn more and say yes to offshore drilling and exploration.

Just think about it. Does it seem safer to get our oil tanked into this country on big oil tankers or drilled offshore and brought through pipelines? If we do nothing we still have to deal with the oil seepage which accounts for 63% of the oil found in our oceans and on our beaches.

View from the North Pole

Would you like to see pictures from the North Pole? I found this website and it is very cool (no pun intended). They even have a section that shows web cam animation. Check it out at: Arctic Theme Page.

Also, here is another page I found that is quite interesting. Icecap

I think it is so important to hear both sides of the story so everyone can m

ake up their own minds whether to believe of disbelieve our climate crisis.

Here is what the Old Farmers Almanac has to say about the colder temperatures coming.

Also, if you heard the hype about the arctic sea ice disappearing this summer you will be happy to know they (NSIDC) now report that the sea ice has now stopped melting and that it is UP from last year. They won't make a big point to that though because they don't like the results. See their title to the story. "Arctic Sea Ice Now Second-Lowest on Record." Don't you think it should read "Good News! Arctic Sea Ice Melt Up From Last Year!" That should be great news, shouldn't it?

NSIDC

Weird just weird.

What now, Global Cooling?

Come on! Do we even have this thing figured out!

The sun makes history! It's first spotless month in a century! Does this mean we are headed for a global cooling? They used it in a way that is misleading to the public. This twisting of information just makes me mad. Come on!! Everything we hear, see and watch must be filtered through the screen of context because anyone can twist things to mean anything they want it to mean. Many have their our own agenda to push and many will fake reality in hopes that they will blindside the public.

This is from the Daily Telegraph on how this photo was used. We talk about this subject all the time, "Is Global Warming really true and is it caused by man?" Jamie and I disagree on this topic because I am more of the skeptic and I am just not convinced that man has caused all these problems. I definitely believe we need to be stewards of this land just like we take care of our homes and our property we own. We need safe water, safe food and safe air. But, the whole destruction of the Earth caused by man. ummm.. don't know.

Anyway, if you want take a look at this video( I think it has a part two also). Very interesting on all the facts. I wouldn't even know how to check the facts anyhow, nonetheless, it gives a different side to the story. Which is good to see because you can come up with your own conclusions.

Here is another bit of information I ran across. John McLean Just in case your interested.

Do you know an organic farmer?

In honor of the great stewards of this land we would like to say "Thank You" for keeping our food safe, our water clean and our soil free of harmful chemicals!

So, if you or someone you know is an organic farmer, let us know! Yes, even the poo smells.

It was a small farm dedicated to ducks, chickens and kitty cats. It had a great big pond (or a very small lake) whatever you prefer to call it, filled with fish and ducks. It was a fun place just to hang out.

Here are a couple of pictures of the kitties. If you are interested in starting your own business but not sure how to begin, have we got a site for you!!

We started this website only a year ago and we have found that we can not dedicate the time it needs to keep everything up to date and push it forward. We have had a wonderful time setting it up and designing all the shirts, but we both have come to the realization that our schedules will not allow us to further this pursuit. We wish to pass it on to caring hands who can move it forward into the direction of their dreams.

So, if you are interested. Drop us an email and we can fill you in. We are only looking to sell our inventory and recoup the cost of building the site, nothing else. This is a great and easy way to start your own business and it is only limited to the amount of energy you want to put into it!

Hope to here from you!!

The gals at Green Girl T-shirt Co.

Site Down

Well, we have been experiencing some technical difficulties lately and need to apologize for our site being non-accessible. We have had some big problems with our checkout and we are working hard to get things resolved. We should be up and at em' in about a week.

We are changing our checkout to strictly PayPal (Contact us for wholesale orders). PayPal is a great payment option and you may use all major credit cards, even American Express. Which we did not accept before. We think this will be an easier and faster way to checkout. Well, it just so happens that two companies have asked us if we would donate some of our shirts for their Earth Day celebrations! We jumped at the chance because we are all about spreading the news! Especially about our food system, which needs lots of attention... check this out from NaturalNews.com

The Food Irradiation Plot: Why the USDA Wants to Sterilize Fresh Produce and Turn Live Foods into Dead Foods

Our food system and the way it is produced is our life force. If we destroy our soil we destroy our food. Soil needs attention. It needs to be fed and it needs to rest. Did you know that: Each shovel of soil holds more living things than all the human beings ever born. The dirt on soil These living things were created for a purpose and if we pour our chemicals on them they will be destroyed and our food will suffer.

Since spring is here we must also think of our lawn. Think about it...If you put chemicals on your lawn, to make it nice and green and the envy of your neighbors, are you doing a disservice to all your microbe friends under the earth? Try and embrace the flaws of your lawn and find natural ways to help things out. Organic Lawn Care For The Cheap and Lazy!

That's why we are so happy to be a part of these two Earth Day celebrations. It gets the word out!

The first celebration our shirts will make an appearance at is the Green Carpet Earth Day event at the Sagamore Hotel in South Beach on April 22nd. The portfolio style handbag, that our shirts will be included in, are being donated by Ecoist (www.Ecoist.com ). They will be given to the first 30 people who match the suggested donation mark. We feel very honored that we were asked to be a part of this celebration.

Another celebration that our shirts will be at is at the Corporation Service Company in Wilmington, DE. They started a Green Committee at their office and their first big event is the Earth Day celebration. They plan to educate and teach many important things including how to choose less wasteful supplies. They are even having a waste free lunch challenge. How cool is that! We can't tell you how happy we are that spring is on the way! The snow is melting and the birds are singing. What a great time of year!

Well, we had our share of the flu that made it's way through our homes. But we are finely all better. Maybe just a few coughs and runny noses left, but hey, we can handle that.

Now that it is spring we plan on going out and shooting some photos and maybe some video at the farmers market and local farms. I think we will start our own photo gallery. Sounds like fun.

Remember, to pass the word along about our kids t-shirts. Now, with this huge beef recall looming over our heads it's hard not to think about it.

What are we doing to our food system and will this ever stop? I wonder if all of us could stop for a moment and think. What is all this abuse the animal has to endure doing to our bodies after we eat our big juicy steak? Does the meet somehow hold onto the toxic emotion? I know what happens to us when we are under allot of stress. Not too healthy are we?

It is just so sad that our society has stooped down to this level in the treatment of our animals. Maybe we should all think about limiting our intake of meet. You know, it's those big factory farms that are producing all those greenhouse gases anyway. I know, I know, it's hard for some of you to give it up. Looking down at your plate with lentils and couscous just doesn't feel the same does it? Well, if you do buy beef or chicken you can always look for a local farm in your area that supports organic sustainable agriculture. It's better than the alternative!

We leave you with Proverbs 12:10
Good people are good to their animals;
the "good-hearted" bad people kick and abuse them.

Feed your kids well! :)

We Love This!!

A friend just sent us a couple pictures that we just had to post! Plus, he says, "It's very popular. " I guess his friends gather around to see what is in his lunch each day. How cool is that! It is designed so when you open the box you see everything which makes it very eye appealing. The containers are bright colors and when you add colorful food it makes it even better. Check out some photos of what people have come up with. Photos

This is so cool, even for the moms, because it gets your creative juices flowing. One in particular was this Sony Reader Digital Book. I looked at that thing and thought how cool! It can hold 160 books at a time! Awesome, I would love to have that! I was also looking at all the gadgets for my ipod that I got for Christmas. You can get speakers, cases, covers, and headsets. Then on the next isle was cell phones and blackberries, portable dvd players, and mp3 players. Then I saw GPS systems, satellite radios and a new thing called a mylo (something like a PC in your pocket).

Well, after making my mental wish list of all these things, it started me thinking about my Grandparents and their thoughts on all the "new" things of their day. I remember when computers came out, boom boxes, microwaves, and cable tv. Oh, do not forget the remote control!! That was huge! No more getting up and down to change the channel. Then there was the VCR and Atari (don't forget that! Ms. Packman and Frogger) Actually, I think I got the Odyssey play system. That never did take off like Atari did. Bummer.

My Grandparents view on all this was probably the same for allot of your Grandparents as well. Who needs that? It's going to rot your brain. You need to go outside and play more. You can get cancer from that! In my day we played games, actual games, none of this computer stuff! We didn't have TV in our day we just used our imagination! The list goes on and on!!

Being young, at the time, I can remember rolling my eyes and saying yeah, yeah, whatever!! I just thought all this stuff was cool! I also remember saying. "Come on Grandma, they wouldn't make this stuff it was bad for us." Well, I'm reconsidering that statement now. Were our Grandparents right?

The things that make me think they were right are the signs of our society today. We are overweight, stressed out, impatient, sick, and depressed. We take a gazillion medications to bring us up and then more to bring us back down. Our communication is based on text messaging and email. Bringing and end to the days of the coffee clutch (woman getting together over coffee to exchange coupons, recipes, and a bit of gossip). Also, think about what we see on tv these days! We are so involved in everyone else's lives with all this reality tv, that we forget we have one too.

What about our environment? What is happening there? All this electromagnetic chaos is causing all kinds of problems!! Is the colony collapse disorder that is affecting the bees caused by this? It's a speculation. What about the migratory birds? I think we are screwing them up too. Don't even get me started about the GMO problem or the cloned animals! I just read somewhere that they are now working on a new GM carrot that will produce more calcium. Ya know, people, just stop being lazy and eat a balanced diet. We don't need to manipulate our food just because we are choosing to eat all the wrong foods! People have survived thousands of years on the crops that have been given to us! The carrot does not need perfecting. Our thoughts do.

I can't help but wonder what is all this technology accomplishing and will it ever stop? I don't think it will and I don't know how much more we our planet can take.

But, I guess what I can do is this. Keep buying books. Hold it and feel each page. Get connected again and take a look at it when I'm finished. No digital book will show the emotion; the bended corners, the coffee stains, a jotted note or two, and maybe a dried teardrop. Yes, a book! It feels much better in my hands.

"To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch... to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived This is to have succeeded!" Emerson

ps. They were right. Now I'm going to play a game with my kids. A real game, not on the computer or tv. I bet Grandma is smiling right now!

Good Morning God

We not only dig organics and everything sustainable and just but we truly, truly dig God! Our passion for what we do thrives because of our love for the Lord and his creation. What better way to show your love than to take care of his creation!! The power of a tiny seed nested in the ground can feed many. It's not by our understanding but by His. We will never get it, never understand it and never make it (the seed) better. Understand this so today you may look at your food a bit differently. It truly is a gift from God.

Just cruising around the web this morning and someone told me to look up Coffey. Oh my! What a cutie pie! Had to upload this video! It seems as though they are going to keep allowing companies to label their milk with a r-BGH free label!! Good news!! Now we can make a choice as to whether or not we want to ingest growth hormones with our big glass of milk.

Ya know, the bottom line is this. Those big biotechnology companies can tamper with our food all they want (we wish they wouldn't but it's hard to stop that), but please don't deceive us consumers and sneak this stuff into our food without us knowing about it. Let us make up our own minds. What the FDA says is safe doesn't hold water in our bucket anyhow. We don't know who compiles the "safe list". Do they have vested interest in what they deem safe? Don't know. But,all of us should start making these decisions for ourselves and stop allowing a government agency control over our health. All we need is a label that says what is in the food. Genetically engineered ingredients, r-BGH and now cloned animals. It should be on the label. We always say "Eat the way God intended. From His garden."

Thanks Food and Water Watch for all you do!!

Get the press release here.

Icky Bad! Sounds like fun to us!

Being Earth friendly is also important to the Playgarden. They use recycled materials, organic products and even have an energy saving air-purification system! I'm sure we have all been into an indoor playcenter that needed a good air-purification system! High on the stinky meter!! Good for them! Like we should have done it this way or I wish we didn't do that, or change this. But, actually each step brings you closer to your destination. I think the key is to focus more on the now than on formulas and business plans.

Well, as we were talking (actually emailing) this song came to mind and we thought "This is totally us! We are Laverne and Shirley!" I used to love that show by the way! Especially Lenny and Squiggy! Anyway, this is now our theme song!

No matter what you are trying to accomplish in life just remember to be true to yourself and do it your way! There is not a formula out there that can make you succeed. You can analyze, crunch numbers, formulate, create charts, graphs and all that other mumbo jumbo. But, when it comes down to it, look at what is in your heart and maybe step out of the box (filled with formulas and pie charts) a little and try it your way! Who knows what will happen! Remember it was the turtle who won the race , not that crazy rabbit.

So, here we go... One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Schlemeel, schlemazel, hasenfeffer incorporated!!

Have a wonderful day! I'm sure we will post more Laverne and Shirley clips!

Friends

We just got some new photos of kids diggin' their Green Girl Tees! You can bang the whole encompassing drum of global warming, or you can take one of the sub-drums and drum on those a bit. That's what we have chosen to do. We have taken the drum of our agriculture system and want to beat on that a bit. This includes issues such as organic agriculture, factory farming, GMO'S, labeling of our food and so on, you get the point.

We look at our shirts and think of walking billboards. Even if we get one person to check out the issues for themselves and start making little changes, we have served a purpose. Isn't it kinda cool to think that just by walking around with a tee shirt on you can start up a conversation and fill some people in on the issues?

We are hearing this from more and more people. One in particular, was a woman who wore the "stick it tee". She wore her's around at a school function and was able to pass on some good information. People will start talking to you, then they will ask "Hey, what's up with your shirt? What does that mean?" Then you just go ahead and share some information, it's that easy! You will be surprised how many people are not even aware of these issues.

See, you don't need to be radical about your activism, unless you want to. If your not one to march up and down the street and yell through your megaphone, just quietly slip on your tee and walk around. Someone just might stop you and ask a few questions, kinda cool. Also, don't sweat it if you don't have all the awnswers, just send them to our website, we have chocked it full of good informantion and a number of links to educate them further.

Another thing to remember is don't think our tees should just be worn on their own. You can funk it up a bit too! Layer it over another long sleeve or short sleeve shirt, put on a funky belt or were some chunky jewelry with it! Have fun. The "Farmer tee" looks great with a jean mini and a big brown belt sinced arond the waist. Very cool.

Last, if you have a club or organiztion that you would like to buy these for, do not hesitate to contact us and ask about special pricing! You can order just 12 shirts and get them for wholesale cost! Also, if you are a farm owner and want to order some for your farm workers to wear at the market, contact us! We could possibly even get your farm name printed on them for you too! Anything, is possible!

Bottom line. We want to make it easy for you to get the word out. If these issues are important to you, what do ya have to lose?

Don't forget! We offer free shipping now! (within the US) So, order your favorite today!

We leave you with Store Wars! Check it out!

Have a happy healthy day!

The gals at Green Girl T-Shirt co.

I'm Full from Food and Time to Shop!

Well Happy "Day After" Thanksgiving Everyone!

Gotta say that I'm truly grateful for the food we ate yesterday. In relation to our last post - this year I really sat down and considered where our food was coming from, said a silent prayer to the farmers who produced the food, and to our turkey for giving it's life for a meal for the family to enjoy. I really considered HOW much we take so many things for granted. Well...once I packed away the last dish, I went to bed early so I could get up and take advantage of the sales on "Black Friday". Have to say... NEVER have done that before! Got up at 4:00 a.m. But I set my frame of mind that I would relax, enjoy the moment and if I found something to cross off the list it was a bonus. :-) I'll tell ya..."bonus" I did! Landed 8 gifts in 1 hour! A record! But as I stood in line, I was also happy that I had a list and thought a few things out ahead of time. Especially since my awareness in taking care of the planet is stronger these days.

You know, all the talk of being "green"...turn that off, recycle this, unplug that, etc. All terrific ideas...all great things. But have you considered that less is more? That "less" can help the planet as well? Time is tight and being "green" is not easy in a time of convenience, however, there are moments, such as Christmas shopping that we can consider not just purchasing "stuff" to accumulate in the back of someone's closet. This year I am looking at gifts that bring a family together (e.g. movies, games, food items, etc.) and stuff that people can really use (e.g. organic soap and bath gels, soy candles, comfy pjs, et.c) rather than things that will no longer be used in a year or just takes up more "space" on this planet. Let someone else pick out vases for their homes. Besides, your taste isn't always theirs... I've also spoke with family members on shortening the lists and being a bit more practical in helping to save the planet. (Great excuse eh?!?!? ;-) Reducing "stuff" can help cut down on the planet. Have you seen kids closets lately?!?! (or mine a few years back) Look... I'm a VERY busy gal as much as the rest of you are, but if you have to go shopping ANYWAY, why not draw up a list with a terrific mug of organic tea or coffee ahead of time and consider the "stuff" you are going to buy and really think about what a person wants or needs. Or consider accumulating a pile of items to donate for each item of a new gift that you recieve...my mantra this year has been: I got a new shirt, now I must give one away!

By the way, I saw a great deal for wrapping paper at Walgreens (Buy 2 get 1 for free), ripped out the coupon and then thought, hey...how much paper do we use just to wrap presents? Oh man...here I go again! Hmmm...how can we dress up newspaper for wrapping gifts? ;-) Got any ideas? Newspaper isn't exactly "holiday" but there has to be something you clever crafters know out there...Let us know!!! I have a ton of newspapers that I recycle weekly. It would be great to wrap some gifts in it AND save some money.

One final thought during these next busy weeks: Remember, take being "green" a step at a time and just adjust what you are doing on a daily basis anyway. Baby steps.

GG Jaims

Happy Local Thanksgiving!

What better way to celebrate Thanksgiving than to celebrate it with the harvest from your local community!

It doesn't matter whether it's from your own garden, the CSA you belong to or your local organic market or bakery. It all helps in getting you connected again to your food.

When we start to make this connection we start to get a real appreciation for the true goodness of it all! We should all be blessed and thankful for all the food that is able to be grown within our local communities. It is what makes each community strong and healthy.

Fast food is too assessable to us nowadays and we have lost the true value of good food. We are so busy with everyday living that we don't take the time to even think about what we are eating, where it came from or how it was produced.

Try to change that this Thanksgiving and Christmas. Get in your kitchen and cook up an awesome meal. See it, smell it, taste it! But, most of all LOVE it! Yumm Yumm.

Watch this great video from our friends at Food And Water Watch! Good And Local

Happy Thanksgiving!!! Take a look at it. I didn't know that it's mark was the number 3. I also didn't know shower curtains were made from PVC. I always hated that smell!

Speaking of all those numbers you find on the bottom of all your plastic goods. Do you know what each one means? It's all confusing to me, but I found this nifty handout that you can print out and save for future reference. Resin Codes. Just remember though, these numbers do not tell you how to use the product they are only used for recycling purposes.

Also, ran across this article from Greenpeace. It also talks about PVC and gives you the plastic pyramid. From bad to worse, I guess. Pyramid of plastics. Plastic, plastic, plastic it's everywhere!! Oh, and don't think that just because you recycle your plastic that you are saving the landfills. That is only a temporary fix and it will find it's way there eventually. Sorry to be a Debbie Downer but, it's true. Most of the plastic recycled is turned into 2nd unrecyclable products, not into another container. Bummer.

See:

Misconception #2: Curbside collection will reduce the amount of plastic landfilled.

Not necessarily. Since most plastic reprocessing leads to secondary products that are not themselves recycled, this material is only temporarily diverted from landfills. Furthermore, if collecting plastic for recycling makes it seem more environmentally-friendly, people may feel comfortable buying more of it (and therefore increase the production of virgin resin)!

Find all 7 misconceptions here.

We all just need to limit our use of plastics and stop being so dependent on that stuff. I know, it's so hard though because they make it so darn convenient!

Well, hope you are having a plastic free day today. Yeah, right.

A little Delay plus a little Moo!

Hey all!!

Just wanted to update you as to why our kids shirts aren't posted yet. I guess, since Halloween was last week, we just fell behind. If you have kids in school you know how time consuming it is to get the kids ready plus do your duties as room mom! Parties, Parties, Parties! Yikes! It also doesn't help to get sick. Hopefully, we are back on track!

As soon as we get the pictures done we will load these puppies up so you can take a look. They will make cute Christmas gifts!

Let's see. I'm trying to think if I have any "green" news to share. Oh, I did find out that the reason why cows produce more greenhouse gases than cars is not necessarily the poo ( that causes a whole host of other problems! as in contaminated water) it is all that belching they are doing. It seems, since the start of the Big AG movement they have been switching cows over to a sort of fast food diet plan. Like eating at Micky D's everyday. Have you seen Super Size Me? We all know what happened to him! He did do a lot of belching.

Well, cows were created to eat a variety of natural grasses (not grain, and not fast food grass). They have a special digestive system that contains 4 compartments. The rumen, reticulum, omasum and the abomasum. Cows and other ruminants, such as goats and sheep are unique in that they can convert grass into protein. No other animals can do that.

The rumen is like a 45 gallon fermentation tank that allows resident bacteria to convert cellulose into protein and fats. Cool. They were designed a certain way! I think someone knew what he was doing.

Well, in all our invite wisdom (or, wisdom we think we have) we, as people, thought that system wasn't good enough (as in most cases, think of GMO's) We needed cows to grow bigger and faster. We will do this by any means possible even if it means going against creation/nature.

So, the cows natural pastures that consisted of a variety of grasses and flowers was now changed over to the Micky D's of grasses, the perennial ryegrass. This grass grows quickly and in huge quantities. Remember, no time to waist! But, it lacks in nutrients so the cows aren't getting what they need, just a lot of belching!

Now researches are trying to come up with more "ideas" to solve this problem. They want to mix the old way, natural grass, with the new way, cheap grass. They want to bring in genetically engineered plants to help trap airborne nitrogen to improve the soil. They even want to give the cows a pill that will reduce their belching, I guess.

When will we realize that there are no shortcuts in the way animals and plants have been designed. Our creations yes! Cars, buildings, airplanes and all electronics. Yes! tinker with that stuff all you want. But please leave our food, animals and plants out of your "fix it plan". That plan was long ago perfected. What audacity we have to think we can make something better when we don't even possess the original blue prints. I'm talking about the system as a whole. Nature and how it all works together. Synergy

Bottom line. Cows were designed to eat natural grass. Let's not try to convert them into something that is beyond their capabilities just to satisfy our desires. If this concerns you find a farm that rotates it's herd from pasture to pasture to get a balanced diet. I think you will find less gassy cows! As Michael Pollan said. " We are what what we eat eats too."

Cool site for grass fed facts. Eat wild

Speaking of Michael Pollan. Read this article he wrote. It is a great look into the problems of grain fed cows. Power Steer

I found a little diagram of a cow. Just to show you the parts. Cow parts 101.

Have a great day!! Makes me wonder then...what is the percentage on our poo? Hmmm... ;-)

Sooo...got the book Aims recommended: Deliciously Deceptive by Jessica Seinfeld. Interesting recipes and opportunities to sneak some veggies in the food. But you know, the concept is also a good idea to get more veggies in the diet then just what you cook for dinner. There is a muffin recipe where you can get 1/4 your daily recommendation of veggies. The trick - will it be any good? So, this weekend I am going to stock up on all the ingredients and give it a try. I'll take some pics too. We'll see what we come up with, however, it won't be considered a success unless I see a smile on Jeff's face. He's my big kid. If it tastes "bad" then we have "good". ;-)

For all you non-toxic cleaning supply people - came across a site that has all sort of useful ideas for vinegar http://www.angelfire.com/cantina/homemaking/vinegar.html .

And for those of you who are ditching the plastic grocery bags for the recycleable bag - Method cleaning products is offering a free bag if you use their products http://www.givegreener.com/
Save the landfills!

Have a great weekend!
Jaims

Gas vs. Poo

QUICK RELATED FACTS:
YOUR DIET IMPACTS ENVIRONMENT MORE THAN YOUR CAR
13 PERCENT = The percentage of greenhouse gases created by all trucks, SUVs, cars, airplanes, trains and other transportation. ( I know, neither sounds pleasant, but the analogy fits!)

Above was a quick fact from the Organic Bytes newsletter. ( I had to add my flash of moral thought though, as you didn't know, right?)

So, if you are one of those people on a mission to get all those big SUV's off the road. Why not focus your energy on getting all the factory farms off the land too! I think the poo problem is a far more stinkier problem than gas. Even though they both leave a stink, the poo will sit and stew for a long time while gas doesn't have that much hang time (unless it's a bean burrito). :) Good observation! Let's clean up the poo!!

Now, for some ideas:

Find a local farm to get your meat from. They treat their animals with respect and don't create a lot of poo. They are good stewards to the land and don't contaminate our water.

Check out the 100 mile diet. It gives you good information on why you should eat local and how to do it.

Need to find a farm? Check out Local Harvest! Put in your zip, city or state and Presto! You got the goods!

Choose your local restaurants instead of those big chains. Most of the big guys get their meat from all those poo farms.

Oh, and you can't forget to look at the Eat Well Guide!

Well, I gotta go. It seems the dog under my feet has a little gas problem too! Kinda uplifted my spirits a little. Now, who doesn't need that?

It was this video from the Earthday Network talking about this school in Washington DC, the Sidwell Friends School. A school that has taken on the issues surrounding our planet and the climate crisis.

You know, as a mother, you can't help but think about what this planet is going to be like for our children in years to come. What have we, as people, done to create such a problem?

It's time to take a step back and see what we can do to help make a change for the better.

A few things come to mind.

First, educate yourself. You won't change unless you are aware of the issues and the outcomes.

Second, make little changes. Buy organic apples this week, cancel your weed killer application for your yard this fall or spring (who says a yard has to be perfect?). Do you and the girls get together once a month? Why not have an organic wine and cheese party! Have each friend bring their favorite glass, share a good book and drink up! Do your kids like all that icky hot lunch food at school everyday? Compromise, let them pick 2 days a week for hot lunch and the other three make their lunch with organic goodies. Another simple thing to do is pass on some knowledge to a friend (the easiest of all)!

Last, slow down. Turn off your tv and play with your kids, take a walk (your dog will like that), be thankful, or make a good home cooked meal for your family with all organic ingredients ( you wont believe the sense of accomplishment you'll get from that!)

Just making conscious decisions in what you buy makes a huge difference! Another thing to remember, is that it takes a little time and effort to find the change between the couch cushions but it's definitely worth it!

So, take a look and see what this school is doing. It's Pretty cool!

Sidwell Friends School

Have a great day!!

Sneaky food!

Ha Ha! Jaims. I saw your post and had to reply. Maybe husbands are a lot like kids!

Yesterday I just made a chocolate beet cake! Who Knew! It was very very good! The frosting was a bit much but I'll explain in a bit.

First, I saw Jessica Seinfeld on Oprah the other day and she has a new book out called Deceptively Delicious. It's about sneaking in veggies in unsuspecting places. She uses purees so everything comes out moist and delicious. The only thing I have tried was the cake so I can't comment on the other things. I have heard though that it's a more "grown up" flavor to her foods. Maybe good for husbands!

Now, about the frosting. My kids liked the cake but NOT the frosting. It was very strong. You use cream cheese, cocoa powder the unsweetened kind (I think that was overpowering) confectioners' sugar and vanilla extract. Just too much for little taste buds. I even found myself scraping it off. My husband said he liked it though. But, hey, it was cake! He's not going to complain.

Anyway, I will make the cake again just changed the frosting. :)

Maybe that is what you need to do with Jeff. You need to get creative. Another good cookbook you need is the Farmer John Cookbook. This book gives you lots of tips and new ideas for all those goodies in your box. This book comes from the CSA I belong too.

I know, it's hard when you start getting veggies that you have never heard of before. Like kohlrabi. Plus, I still don't know what to do with all my kale!

Well, have a great day! And get to cookin'!

Over and out.

Oops. Forgot to tell you what Green Bags are. They are bags that you put your fresh produce in and they remove the gases to help prolong the shelf life. I think I said before, my strawberries got a funny taste though. They kept ripening. But, they did last longer and didn't get any mold or decay. That's good, because if you do nothing mine start to rot in a couple days! Anyway, they do help. I have heard about little packets that you can throw into containers too. They might be worth a look into.

Happy Friday!

Well it's a wonderful friday morning...i woke up this morning to hear that Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize! Terrific news. It's exciting that this issue of global warming is on the table and being taken seriously. Good for this guy...here he thought his destiny a few years back was running our country and instead his path was diverted to saving the planet! No pain, no gain. ;-)

On a lighter note...what is a green bag Aims?

Oh! So the latest on my end...finally found a local farm/ CSA (find out more what a CSA is on our Knowledge page) to deliver fresh vegetables. The fun part of this is that you don't know what to expect. It's whatever is in season. So my first box contained edamane (i know i spelled that wrong), zucchini, a yellow watermelon?!?!?, squash, small baby tomatoes, etc. - and it's different down here in Florida with our weather so you don't generally receive the same sort of "fall" vegetables that someone in the seasonal states might receive (like my bud Aims) - ok all - here's the challenge though...Jeff (my husband) eats about 2 vegetables at home(but a restaurant or someone's home he'll be more adventurous let's say...) - corn and green beans. So now we have all these fresh vegetables and as I am pulling them out of the box, he is all ready wrinkling his nose. Later that night, I boiled the edamane and shucked them on the couch while we were watching Bionic Woman (not as good as the original of course) and out of the corner of his eye he was watching me. "I'm not eating that crap. Gross!!" he says. I told him if he wasn't careful I was going to grind it up and sneak it his Thurday night beef burrito. So now I have these vegetables (fresh) and how am I going to get him to eat them? ;-)~

GMO'S What!

I'm Back!! It's Green Girl Aims. Just stopping by again to say hi
and to fill you in on the news that's been circulating in my brain.

First, I have started using my Green Bags. They seem to be ok. Still not quite sure about them. One thing that was weird, is that when I put my strawberries in them they seemed to ripen fast. They lost their sweet taste. Not sure why. They didn't rot out or mold, just had a more different taste. Hummmm.. It's like things still ripen they just don't get brown or moldy. I haven't made up my mind about them. I'll keep you posted.

Also, I came across some interesting information that I was not aware of. You know those CF bulbs everyone is telling you to put in your home. Well, they contain a small amount of mercury. Now, I'm not saying don't buy them, I just think people need to be aware of how to dispose of them properly. If all of us start using them and just throw them in the trash we could start a brand new problem with our landfills and contamination. Came across this website. Check it out, lots of good info.

Things you should know

Fact Sheet

Hope it all helps.

We are so close in getting our kids tees completed. They are deliciously cute!! I can't wait to get them up on the site.

Over and out.

Green Girl Jaims

What's shriveled up in my fridge you ask? I think my brain is! Trying to figure out this blogging thing was getting the best of me. But now I got it and now it's my turn to blog the world.

Hello all...This is Jaims. I live in Boynton Beach, Florida very close to the ocean - 9 years - originally from Rockford, Illinois (you can take a girl out of the midwest but you can't take the midwest out of the girl.) I live here with my husband, Jeff, and my dog-son, Cecil Comisky Mershon. (yes, named after the Chicago White Sox ball field).

It's Sunday and rainy here today. Love it! It's rare to have it rain all day - most days it's too sunny to spend the day in sweats (you feel guilty to be inside and it's not the same) soooo, I'm in my sweat pants, drinking my fair trade coffee, and was reading the latest issue of Plenty Magazine (green reading). I also finished up reading the latest issue of Real Simple. They had a cool reference to a website that has eco-shopping in one stop online. www.shopgreen.pricegrabber.com - apparently the site has over 20,000 products!

Not bad for green awareness today. And that's the key to this blog when you read it. How 2 people are becoming more aware of taking care of our planet (air, soil, water, food sources, animals, etc.) and the day to day struggles as well. (Because a green life is not perfect - I just turned my air conditioning down because it's SO humid today! But offset this pleasure for no shower (saved water) - but hey?!?!? who needs a shower on a rainy day when sitting in my sweat pants! ;-)

Well catch "y'all" (my only southern attribute I've picked up in 9 years in southern florida) later - going to enjoy my air conditioning with a pot of chili and turn on some football. Da Bears!

Ciao!
Jaims

Green Girl Aims

Hey everyone! Just thought I would give you a quick intro. about myself.

I'm a stay at home mom with 3 kids and one big kid, my husband. It's a crazy household we live in and I can not keep the darn house picked up! I have WAY to much going on and my brain is always thinking of the next thing to do. In some crazy way though I like it. Hum, who knew? I also think I have developed ADD since I became a mother. Again, I think it is because of all the things I have going on. Tasks, just don't seem to get accomplished like they use to.

Example, cleaning out the fridge. As I was grabbing the butter out of the fridge this morning, (I made pancakes for everyone today, no school.) I found a shriveled up pepper. I had to laugh and even took a picture of it. It was kinda cute. I guess organic peppers shrivel up just like the others! I got some of those Green Bags -Evert-Fresh Green Bags. I'll let you know how they work and if they keep my little peppers from shriveling up. I just have to remember to put my stuff in the bags. I usually just run home quick and throw everything into the fridge. Plus, I think you have to make sure everything is dry when you put it in the bag, no moisture at all.

I belong to a CSA and I'm hoping this will help me keep my goodies fresh longer. It's hard when you get all this good produce and it rots in your fridge because you can't use it fast enough. What a waste eh? Again, more planning that my brain is having a hard time keeping up with! Or maybe it's me. I can't keep up! Ha Ha

Well, hope you all are having a great day! I have to go and take care of my kiddies. A mothers job is never done.

Oh, speaking of kiddies. We are working on a new line of kids tees. They are way to cute! I can't wait to get them out. I hope you will like them. Sizes will be 2, 4 and 6. :) We will keep you posted on how it's going with them. Our creative brains are working. Good News!!

Hey Jaims! How is your day going? Any shrively things in your fridge??

over and out. Blog.

We will be writing about "living the green life", or at least trying to, and the challenges we face in doing so.

Ya know, it's a tough world out there and maybe if we share our story, you won't feel so bad! We all have struggles with what food to buy, what light bulbs to buy, what clothes to wear, what to recycle and what to just pitch. It's crazy!

Don't sweat it though! We got your back. At least we are all trying to make a difference. Isn't that what matters most?

We hope you enjoy a laugh or two, life is too serious sometimes, and enjoy finding your own Green Groove!

Carry on,

Amy (Aims), Jamie (J'aims)

oh, about our names. Maybe we thought we were too, who knows! I guess, they are kinda corny now, but oh well. We still like to use them. It must bring us back to our high school days! Ah, the days of yesteryear! Ha Ha. Don't worry, we're not that old!
